Dance class for People with Parkinson’s

Penrith Health and Wellbeing Hub, Penrith Hospital

2pm Fridays

NO CLASSES Dec 6, Dec 27 2019

Jan 3, Feb 7, Feb 14, Apr 3 2020

The classes are for people with Parkinson’s, their family and friends, and for other people who want to dance, to contribute music, and generally share a fun and creative time.

What is Dance for PD? The programme’s fundamental working principle is that professionally-trained dancers are movement experts whose knowledge about balance, sequencing, rhythm and aesthetic awareness is useful to persons with PD. In class, teaching artists integrate movement from modern, ballet, tap, folk and social dancing, and choreographic repertory to engage participants’ minds and bodies and create an enjoyable, social environment for artistic exploration.

The results translate into daily life, studies show, as participants demonstrate an improvement in walking and fine-motor skills, such as tapping a finger, and feel an uplift in mood and a better sense of self that comes from gaining more physical control. There are many peer reviewed studies from all round the world – contact Virginia for links.

Penrith classes are led by Virginia Taylor PhD who has trained in the Dance for PD programme with the Mark Morris Company in New York City. Virginia has been a professional dancer and choreographer, alongside working in education and the community, over many years. She is fully qualified insured and vetted!

The class is being run cooperatively starting with pioneer participants and volunteers. Come and have a go! Many people who never thought of themselves as participants in a dance class find themselves addicted ...everyone moves safely within their own zone of confidence. That might be always seated, with help, or the sky's the limit.
